EFB-POSITIVEWarning (W)

A resource ending the year negative

CDE's wordingEnding balance (Object 979Z) is negative for the following resources. Please explain the cause of the negative balances and your plan to resolve them.

Warning. CDE accepts it with an explanation entered in the TRC explanations.

What it means

A resource ending the year negative

A negative ending balance (979Z) in a resource means it spent more than it had. CDE accepts the warning with an explanation of the cause and the plan to resolve it, but the cause is usually a missing entry.

Why it fires

The usual causes

  • Revenue owed but not yet booked (an apportionment or claim receivable)
  • A contribution from unrestricted that was budgeted but never posted
  • Genuine overspending against the grant
How to fix it

The repair

  • Book the receivable if the revenue is earned.
  • Post the contribution (8980 into the resource, negative 8980 in unrestricted) if the shortfall is the general fund's to cover.
  • Otherwise explain the cause and the plan in the TRC explanations.

What the tool shows

Lists each negative resource with the amount and shows the contribution pair that would clear it.
