OBJ-POSITIVEWarning (W)

An object with a negative balance

CDE's wordingThe following objects have a negative balance by resource, by fund:

Warning. CDE accepts it with an explanation entered in the TRC explanations.

What it means

An object with a negative balance

By fund and resource, an expenditure or balance sheet object should not net negative. Credits larger than the charges they offset, or reclasses posted against the wrong object, produce a negative. Transfer objects that are meant to net (5710, 5750, 7310, 7350), cash, the AR/AP objects and the beginning balance objects are excluded; revenues are tested under REV-POSITIVE.

Why it fires

The usual causes

  • A vendor credit or rebate posted to an object that had smaller charges in that resource
  • A reclass that moved more out of an object than went in
  • A prior-year correction posted to the current year object
How to fix it

The repair

  • Move the credit to the object and resource that carried the original charge.
  • If the negative is correct (a genuine refund of prior year expense), explain it.

When CDE changes the technical review checks, hear about it once. A short note the week the new tables post, nothing else.
